They've already proved their worth too, with Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran and substitute Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa all making their debuts in Tuesday's win at Aston Villa. Sissoko's performance even had Alan Pardew purring: "I don't think we would have won if we hadn't signed him….he'll be a superb player for us."
That 2-1 win was Newcastle's first in six Premier League games, and only their third in 19 since October. Importantly, those three victories have all come against relegation rivals - Wigan, QPR and Villa.
I don't think Newcastle will finish in the bottom three, and see a Frenchman of longer Toon standing as key to their hopes. Yohan Cabaye has scored in the last two games, and it's no coincidence that he was out injured for much of the poor run of autumn into winter. He's a shoo-in to be the club's next captain once Fabricio Coloccini gets his wish of going back to Buenos Aires.
So to the puzzle that is Chelsea. Brilliant one game and bungling the next, their inconsistency is doing little to endear Rafa Benitez to the fans who never wanted him anyway.
It's an easy and perhaps unfair comparison to make but it's there looking at us so here you go: 12 league games under Di Matteo this season - 24 points; 12 games under Benitez - 22 points.
After a brief flurry of goals early on, Fernando Torres is back to his worrisome form of the 'pre-Rafaelite era' too, and Demba Ba will probably start this one back at his old club instead. He'll probably score too - and Chelsea will probably win.
You see, I only catch the brilliant side of Chelsea. Four wins in their last nine games - and those are the four games I've commentated on. I'm not going to apply for the manager's job, but might have the right qualifications for a stint as Stamford the Lion!

Team News:
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is expected to give home debuts to Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran, while Sylvain Marveaux is fit after a foot problem.
The only absentees are the injured Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheick Tiote, who is on duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Petr Cech is available for Chelsea after recovering from a calf strain, and Juan Mata has overcome an ankle injury suffered at Reading in midweek.
David Luiz is still out and Eden Hazard completes a three-match ban.

Head-to-head
Chelsea are unbeaten in their last five visits to St James' Park, winning three of them and only conceding one goal.
Newcastle's only league victory over Chelsea in the last 11 attempts was a 2-0 success at Stamford Bridge last May (W1, D4, L5).

Newcastle
Alan Pardew's side earned their first win in six attempts in midweek.
They have not won a league game after going behind for 27 months since a 2-1 victory at West Ham in October 2010.
Newcastle have fielded eight different French players this season - a Premier League record.
Yohan Cabaye has scored an unrivalled five league goals from outside the penalty area since August 2011.
Goalkeeper Tim Krul and defender Mike Williamson have both made 99 appearances for Newcastle.

Chelsea
The Blues are one of two sides, along with Wigan, to have a better away record than at home this season.
They have the division's second best goalscoring and defensive records.
Juan Mata has been directly involved in 18 Premier League goals (nine goals, nine assists) in 19 starts for Chelsea this season.
Frank Lampard has scored nine goals in 11 Premier League starts this season. He is one goal shy of becoming the first player to reach double figures in 10 consecutive Premier League seasons. He has scored 196 goals for Chelsea - six behind the club's record scorer Bobby Tambling.
Chelsea's Demba Ba is still Newcastle's top scorer this season with 13 goals. He has scored five goals in his last six league matches at St James' Park.
