MATCH PREVIEW

Things must be going well for Arsenal when even 'Silent Stan' Kroenke is talking.

The Gunners' majority shareholder gave a rare interview this week to underscore his support for Arsene Wenger and declare himself "totally aligned" with the country's longest-serving manager. Indeed, as Wenger approaches Tuesday's 17th anniversary of his Arsenal appointment, it seems highly likely that he'll soon commit to staying for a good while longer.
LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Image of Mark Lawrenson Mark Lawrenson Football analyst

"Arsenal have got a great record on the road - if you count their penalty shootout win over West Brom in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, they have won their last 11 away games.

"Aaron Ramsey is almost unstoppable too. Some managers might try and rest him, but he is the man in form and will want to keep on playing."

Read Lawro's full prediction and score

It's remarkable to think that just six weeks ago his methods were being loudly criticised by fans at the Emirates and over the airwaves. One major signing and eight straight wins in all competitions later and it's 'tout va bien' for the Arsenal boss.

Leaving aside Wednesday's cup defeat at Birmingham - which Michael Laudrup won't lose sleep over - life is pretty rosy for Swansea at the moment as well.

After losing their first two league games they're now three unbeaten, with an historic European win at Valencia to throw in too.

Yet, whilst that was the second of a current run of three successive away wins, the welcome in the hillside might have got a little TOO hospitable with the Swans having gone seven home games without a win in the Premier League.

Mind you, what a home start they've had this season! A record Liberty Stadium crowd for the Manchester United game was quickly beaten by another for the visit of Liverpool, and now it's Arsenal.

It should be a really good game, with the original pass masters up against a Swansea side that's passed the ball most times and more accurately than anyone else so far. No wonder Wenger is an admirer, with Michu singled out for special attention.

"Like a Bergkamp" is high praise - and a fashionable comparison, with Mesut Ozil's Arsenal impact also likened to that the Dutchman once made.

Bergkamp v Bergkamp? I can't wait to see it.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

These sides have met just 15 times and six of those clashes have come in the last two seasons.
The away team won 2-0 in both league matches last season, with Swansea earning a famous win at the Emirates in December 2012.
In the four matches between these two teams in 2012-13, seven of the nine goals scored came in the last 10 minutes.

Swansea

Swansea have scored two or more goals in three successive Premier League games for the first time since December 2012.
They have conceded just one goal away from home so far but let in six in two matches at the Liberty Stadium.
Going into this weekend, they had the best pass completion rate in the Premier League this season (87.3%).
After five matches they have picked up more bookings for dissent (four) than any other club this campaign.
The Swans have scored the two fastest goals in the top flight so far in 2013-14 (Michu v Crystal Palace 1min 20sec & Shelvey v Liverpool 1min 27sec).

Arsenal

The Gunners are looking to extend their club record of consecutive away wins to 12.
Arsenal have lost only two of their last 21 Premier League games. (W16, D3, L2).
Despite their good start, Arsenal have only kept one clean sheet in five league games so far.
All 11 of their Premier League goals have come from inside the penalty area.
Last season, Aaron Ramsey scored one goal from 46 shots in the league. In 2013-14 he has so far scored three league goals from 12 shots and has seven goals in all competitions.
Mesut Ozil has created more chances (10) in two Premier League games than any Manchester United player has done all season.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• Millwall and Leeds have crossed swords on 30 occasions since 1931, in league and cup and each has won 13.

• The last three Championship clashes have been resolved 1-0, with each club registering a home win last season and Leeds winning in their last but one visit to the New Den in March 2012.

• Last season's corresponding fixture was the first time in nine home league encounters, that the Lions had kept a clean sheet.

Millwall

• Millwall kicked off with a six-match winless sequence (two points out of 18), but have subsequently notched back-to-back victories, home to high-riding Blackpool and away to struggling Charlton.

• The Lions are vying for their longest winning sequence since completing four on the bounce in November last year.

• Three points would give the south London club their 600th victory in second level league football.

Leeds United

Leeds have lost their last three in all competitions, following the Championship loss at Reading and home reverse to Burnley with Wednesday's defeat in the Capital One Cup away to Newcastle.

• All eight of the Whites' league matches have either been drawn or decided by a single goal.

• They have opened the scoring in just one Championship game; only Blackburn can identify with that.

MATCH PREVIEW

Come 3pm on Saturday, there will be no happier football manager than Ian Holloway, who will be free to prowl the technical area again after serving a two-match touchline ban for criticising referee Mark Clattenburg's handling of Crystal Palace's opening game of the season against Tottenham.
LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Image of Mark Lawrenson Mark Lawrenson Football analyst

"I am starting to get a little bit worried about Crystal Palace because they were completely dismantled by Swansea last week.

"I know Ian Holloway was missing from the dug-out for that game and that he will be back from his touchline ban on Saturday, which will have an effect - but not a big enough one."

Read Lawro's full prediction and score

Holloway was also fined £18,000 by the FA for "improper conduct and bringing the game into disrepute" but I'm willing to bet (although not that much) that the ban hurt him far more.

He has admitted feeling detached watching from the stands - unable to instruct, cajole and inspire his players from the sidelines.

Palace face a huge battle to avoid another immediate relegation from the Premier League and having Holloway bobbing in and out of the dug-out is like having a 12th man.

The Eagles have lost four of their five league games so far, with their solitary victory coming against Sunderland, the only team beneath them in the table.

If Palace are living up to the pundits' pre-season pessimism, Southampton are not. Few, if any, expected Saints to be riding so high.

Ending Liverpool's impressive start with victory at Anfield last time out has really made people sit up and take notice of the work being carried out by Mauricio Pochettino, such a controversial appointment last January.

Closer inspection brings greater surprise at how they've done it: clean sheets have been key, while many more points have been collected on the road than at home. In fact, Southampton have not won at St Mary's in the Premier League since 30 March.

If Palace can extend that sorry statistic by grabbing a point or three, Holloway's joy over his comeback will stretch well beyond 3pm.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Crystal Palace have won only one of their last 10 league visits to Southampton (W1, D3, L6).
The south London side are winless in the eight previous Premier League meetings between these clubs (D4, L4).
Saints have won the last three league meetings.

Southampton

Southampton have yet to win at St Mary's in the Premier League this season.
Their three league goals (the joint-lowest total in the top flight) have all come in the second half, with two coming in the last two minutes.
Only Tottenham have conceded fewer than Southampton's total of two league goals this season.
Rickie Lambert, who scored twice the last time the clubs met, has scored 199 goals in English league football. He has had nine shots on goal in this season's Premier League, more than any other player.

Crystal Palace

Palace have lost four of their first five league matches.
Ian Holloway's side have lost all three of their away games this season (two in the Premier League, one in the League Cup).
Palace have won just two of their last 15 league fixtures (Championship and Premier League).
Holloway has used 23 players in this season's Premier League, the joint-highest total.

West Brom are hopeful Victor Anichebe and Nicolas Anelka will be available despite minor knocks.

Claudio Yacob should be fit after recovering from a dead leg, but fellow midfielder Chris Brunt (groin) is set to miss a third successive game.
MATCH PREVIEW

David Moyes knew that his first season would be a game of Snakes and Ladders played out in the full glare of the media.

With every throw of the dice his decisions will be compared to those of Sir Alex Ferguson, and for the first few months critics will claim the club is on the slide whenever points are dropped.

Manchester United occupy their lowest September league position for five years. But good managers don't turn bad overnight - Moyes' side will challenge for the title in the spring.

For now though, the champions need to exorcise the ghosts of derby day, when they were feeble for the first hour.

Ferguson always maintained that being a United player was about more than just wearing the shirt on match days. The pressure is immense. Some buckle. Now it is time to stand up and be counted.

Wayne Rooney did just that last weekend. He looks good right now with four goals in as many games. But without a fit Robin van Persie, United look short of ideas up front.

They've never had a problem in that area over the years against the Baggies. The Red Devils have scored 37 goals in 14 Premier League meetings, and have not lost this fixture at home since Tony "Bomber" Brown bagged a couple for the visitors in a famous 5-3 win in 1978.
Play media

Van Persie will be involved - Moyes

The sides also drew 5-5 on the final day of last season but I can't see another high-scoring affair given Steve Clarke's side have only conceded five goals in seven games this term.

But I can foresee a few problems for the home defence. Stephane Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano have started promisingly, Shane Long is always a willing worker and Nicolas Anelka has a few old scores to settle.

At best, they could nick a point. Old Trafford will be nervy after the derby debacle and the grumbling about Moyes from some knee-jerk reactive fans may get louder before it's quietened.

But it wouldn't surprise me at all if West Brom suffer a stinging United backlash. Home win for me.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

West Brom have never beaten Manchester United in the Premier League (D3, L11).
The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 18 league games against the Baggies, whose last win in this fixture was 2-0 at The Hawthorns in March 1984.
However, West Brom did beat United in a League Cup tie on home turf in 2003.

Manchester United

Defeat on Saturday would leave United with their lowest ever points tally after six games of a Premier League season, and would represent their worst top-flight start since 1989-90.
A draw would make this the Red Devils' poorest start since 2002-03. That season they claimed eight points from their opening six games but still went on to win the title.
The 4-1 defeat by Manchester City was the first time the Red Devils have lost a league or cup game by more than one goal since a 3-0 loss at Newcastle in January 2012.
Michael Carrick has made 26 interceptions this season, eight more than any other Premier League player.

West Bromwich Albion

Victory against Sunderland last weekend gave the Baggies their first victory in nine league games (W1, D3, L5).
Stephane Sessegnon became only the third player to score on his Premier League debut in a match against the club they had just left. The other two were Ipswich's Ian Marshall (against Oldham in 1993) and Sunderland's Stern John (versus Birmingham in 2007).
Three of Albion's four league goals this season have arrived in the final 15 minutes of matches.

MATCH PREVIEW

This match brings together two of the more knowledgeable English bosses in the game, great friends with 21 years of top-flight managerial experience between them. They will share a drink afterwards and if one is toasting a victory it will be certainly be an important one.

Hull City's Steve Bruce will have enjoyed his five-goal thriller and 3-2 scoreline last weekend far more than West Ham's Sam Allardyce did.
A second Premier League win in five games will have been another lift in the levels of belief in Hull's quest to stay in the division.
ewly-promoted teams have often had to wait for that elusive first victory and it's gradually sapped away confidence. Seven points from 15 represents a solid start for Hull, especially having already faced Chelsea and Manchester City.
The experience added in the summer has certainly helped, in particular the signings of Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore.
Their form at the KC Stadium will go a long way to deciding their immediate future and this will be a game they will have earmarked to take something from, just as they have from the meetings with Norwich and Cardiff.
West Ham will certainly have the same thoughts, having not won since the opening day. Creating and scoring has been a clear problem so far, having not scored in three of their five matches. The absence of Andy Carroll and summer recruit Stewart Downing recently has been a telling one.

But they have to find a formula to improve that side of their game and their away form of last season (which saw them lose 12 times on their travels) if they are to better their 10th-place finish in May.

A result in this one would be most welcome as the Hammers' next two matches are against Spurs and Manchester City.

This should be tight and may not have the goals of last weekend's fixtures, but Bruce and Allardyce will only be concerned with winning.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

West Ham did the double over Hull in the 2011-12 Championship season.
They have scored just nine goals between them this season in the Premier League.

Hull City

Despite achieving promotion last season, they have won just seven of their last 18 league matches spread across the Championship and the Premier League - losing eight and drawing three. They have won only three of their eight home matches in that period.
There have been no more than two goals scored in any of their last five Premier League home games.
Danny Graham has not scored in his last 1,320 Premier League minutes of action.
Robbie Brady has been involved in three of the Tigers' five league goals so far this season, scoring two and assisting one.

West Ham

West Ham have not won in the Premier League since the opening day of the season.
They have had just eight shots on target in five league games so far this campaign and have not yet scored away.
But only four top-flight clubs have conceded fewer than the four goals they have let in.
Three of those four goals have been scored by the opposition from outside the box.
West Ham are the only team to have had all their goals scored by English players in the Premier League this season.

Cardiff forward Peter Odemwingie could be rewarded with his first Premier League start for the club after scoring on his full debut in the midweek League Cup defeat at West Ham.

Fellow striker Andreas Cornelius remains out with an ankle problem.
MATCH PREVIEW

When Fulham beat QPR on 1 April, it virtually ensured their Premier League status and, with eight games still left to play, it seemed another top-10 finish was within their grasp.

However, they subsequently ended the campaign by claiming just four more points, losing six of those final matches and scoring just seven more goals in the process.

That stuttering form has again plagued them at the beginning of this season too. Fulham have earned just one point since the opening-day win at Sunderland, leaving them in the bottom three of the fledgling table. Only three goals scored indicates their most significant failure.

Fulham's April Fools Day success remains their last three-point haul at home. A heartening midweek victory in the Capital One Cup against Everton did at least bring some respite at Craven Cottage - the fact that the scorers were Darren Bent and Dimitar Berbatov was equally significant too.

The weekend visitors have also been disappointing of late; Cardiff are winless in the last three, having failed to capitalise on their stunning efforts in humbling Manchester City.
Play media

Mackay 'relishing' trip to Fulham

Like Fulham, Cardiff have also found goalscoring a problem - drawing a blank on three occasions already. Top scorer Frazier Campbell's brace against Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City side is his only successful day so far.

With such statistics, it's perhaps heartening to note that there's never been a goalless draw in the history of a fixture which dates back to the 1920s!

The football annals also offer a particularly good omen for the visiting supporters, as the last time Cardiff won an away game in the top division was back in 1961 at…Craven Cottage.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

The clubs last met 15 years ago, with Fulham winning 2-1 in each leg of their League Cup first-round tie.
Cardiff won the most recent league encounter 4-1 at Fulham in January 1997 when both clubs were in the Football League's lowest tier.
There has never been a goalless draw in 25 league and cup matches between the two clubs at Craven Cottage.

Fulham

Fulham are winless in their last six league matches at Craven Cottage. The draw with West Brom a fortnight ago ended a run of five straight home defeats.
That is their only point in four matches since winning at Sunderland on the opening day.
They have kept just one clean sheet in their last 17 home matches in the Premier League (1-0 v Stoke on 23 February).
Martin Jol's side are the joint-lowest scorers in the division with three goals in five matches.
Last season's 15-goal top scorer Dimitar Berbatov has yet to score in four league appearances this campaign.

Cardiff

Cardiff's last top-flight away win came against Fulham in November 1961. They have since drawn four and lost 11 of their 15 away fixtures in the division.
The Bluebirds didn't manage a single attempt on target during last Sunday's defeat by Tottenham, who had 29 shots - the most by any team in a Premier League game this season.
They have only led a Premier League match for 11 minutes this season - in the 3-2 home win over Manchester City.
All four of their Premier League goals have come after half time.

MATCH PREVIEW

A few weeks ago, you would have given Villa a very good chance of winning this match. But while they have subsequently struggled with injuries and poor home form, Manchester City have suddenly sparked into life.
LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Image of Mark Lawrenson Mark Lawrenson Football analyst

"Will Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini make more changes this time ahead of his side's game against Bayern Munich on Wednesday? I don't think he needs to - it is only September after all, and I cannot believe that any of City's players are tired.

"City were lucky to avoid defeat at Stoke and Pellegrini has got to be careful when he rotates his squad because the Premier League is not like La Liga."

Read Lawro's full prediction and score

City have scored 12 goals in their last three matches in three different competitions. They have become a team again.

Their squad is deeper than arguably any other Premier League club, with the possible exception of Chelsea. They have added width to their attack, addressing the criticism of last season, and manager Manuel Pellegrini can select from four of the very best forwards around.

The players really seem to have taken to Pellegrini. He is very balanced in his interviews and his serenity is an antidote to the increasingly fractious reign of his predecessor, Roberto Mancini.

So what chance Villa? It might suit them that they are the underdogs, especially at Villa Park where they often seem weighed down by their poor home record over the last few years. They have lost both home games this season in the league and were thumped 4-0 by visitors Tottenham in the League Cup on Tuesday.

It seems clear that Villa are better on the counter attack but if they are going to continue to play the same way then they need their forwards to fire - especially now that Christian Benteke is injured. Gabby Agbonlahor has four assists but no goals, while Andi Weimann has also yet to score in the league this season.

At the other end of the pitch, it tells a story that Villa kept a first clean sheet in 27 matches last Saturday at Norwich. Captain Ron Vlaar has already had three different partners in central defence this season, while the full-backs have looked vulnerable at times.

Whoever plays in the back four on Saturday will need to have their wits about them if Villa are to prevent their worst start to a season at home since 1946.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Manchester City have won the corresponding fixture 1-0 in each of the last two seasons. They have registered 18 Premier League victories against Aston Villa, more than against any other team.
Villa have lost their last four league matches against City and their only win in the last nine meetings came courtesy of Darren Bent's debut winner at Villa Park in January 2011 (W1, D1, L7).

Aston Villa

Villa have won just one and lost five of their last seven home league matches, a run that began with the 1-0 defeat by Manchester City in March. They have only earned 11 points from a possible 42 at Villa Park since December (W3, D2, L9).
They have not lost their first three top-flight home matches since 1946.
Villa have the lowest average ball possession in the Premier League this season (40.3%).
Paul Lambert's side kept their first Premier League clean sheet in 27 attempts against Norwich. It was the first time they had opened the scoring this season.
Libor Kozak scored one minute and 41 seconds after replacing the injured Christian Benteke against Norwich.

Manchester City

City are the division's leading scorers with 12 goals following the 4-1 derby win over Manchester United.
Manuel Pellegrini's side have only taken one point from their first two Premier League away fixtures this season. City have only won three of their last 10 away fixtures (W3, D3, L4).
They have kept a Premier League-high 21 clean sheets since the start of last season.
City have conceded only one first-half goal in their last 14 league matches, scored by Anthony Pilkington in Norwich City's 3-2 away win in May.

MATCH PREVIEW

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Erik Thorsvedt repeated it, but it was our own Garth Crooks who actually coined the saying of the season so far. Asked to comment on Spurs' summer transfer dealings an inspired Garth replied: "They've sold Elvis and bought The Beatles."

So far, so true: Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela have looked a pretty fab four as Spurs have won eight of nine games and conceded just one goal, though that solitary goal did lead to defeat in the game they would most have wanted to win - the derby at Arsenal.

Now they face another test - and for Spurs it's arguably a stiffer one - Chelsea.

Stiffer because it would be hard to overstate just how useless Spurs have been against Chelsea over the last couple of decades. Since 1990 the clubs have met 55 times in league and cup, with Tottenham winning only five games to Chelsea's 31. Spurs have won a meagre three Premier League encounters in 42 attempts.

It's a record so poor that you'd forgive Tottenham for just sending the points weaving through the London traffic on the back of a courier's bike to Stamford Bridge, saving themselves the bother of lacing their boots.

But football doesn't work like that. After all, this is Jose Mourinho's new Chelsea. Not the powerhouse steamroller of a side that has flattened Tottenham's proud cockerel to a pulp of messy feathers so often.

This is a Chelsea side which seems shocked at its own shortcomings; a side that had hoped the returning Mourinho would, like some modern-day King Arthur, slide the sword from the stone to unleash a torrent of attacking, blissful, goal-filled football. It hasn't happened.

So the sorcerer and his apprentice meet for the first time on equal terms. At Porto, Chelsea and at Inter, Andre Villas-Boas was to Mourinho what Mourinho had once been to Bobby Robson - a favoured pupil, a protégé; later, successfully for Porto but not for Chelsea, Villas-Boas was cast as his replacement.

How Villas-Boas would treasure a victory over the man with whom, by his own admission, he no longer has a relationship. To bring it back to where we began, how Villas-Boas would love to prove that he is no McCartney to Mourinho's Lennon - not mere excellence compared to genius.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Chelsea's 4-2 victory over Tottenham last season was their first win in seven Premier League visits to White Hart Lane since a 2-0 win in August 2005.
But Spurs' recent record against the Blues has improved - after failing to win any of their first 28 Premier League clashes with Chelsea, they have only lost five of the last 14 (W3, L5, D6).
They have scored just 11 Premier League goals between them from 10 games this season.
Andre Villas-Boas was assistant manager to Jose Mourinho between 2002 and 2009 at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

Tottenham

Tottenham have the best defensive record in any of Europe's top five leagues this season having conceded only one goal so far.
This is only the second time since the 1960s that Tottenham have won four out of their opening five league matches. The only other instance came in the 2009-10 season in which they finished fourth and qualified for the Champions League.
Tottenham have averaged the most shots per game (21) and have allowed the fewest shots of any team (seven) in the league this season.

Chelsea

Ten points is Chelsea's lowest-ever tally after five games since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, along with the 2007-08 season, also under Jose Mourinho, and 2011-12 when Andre Villas-Boas was in charge.
If this game is drawn then Chelsea will have exactly mirrored that start in 2007-08 that saw Mourinho sacked after six matches.
Their tally of six goals from their opening five matches is their joint-lowest at this stage for 18 years.
None of Chelsea's strikers have scored a Premier League goal yet this season. In fact, of Chelsea's previous 25 league goals, only one has been scored by a recognised striker (Fernando Torres v Everton in May).
