MATCH PREVIEW
If a week is a long time in politics, then an hour on football's transfer deadline day can be an eternity.
At 10pm on 2 September, things didn't look too good for Everton. Marouane Fellaini had delivered his transfer request in person in order to force a move to Manchester United and rumours of replacements were still no more tangible than the shadows of the reporters lurking at the gates of their Finch Farm training ground.
By 11pm, Everton were the window's big winners. Yes, Fellaini had gone, but even that move smacked of success.
Manchester United sheepishly declared the fee to be undisclosed but just moments later Everton triumphantly disclosed it - revealing that they had squeezed £4m more than expected out of a desperate United.
Tony Barrett of The Times memorably captured the mood when he tweeted that Everton had "effectively run United CEO Ed Woodward's undies up the flagpole to celebrate their victory".
Not only that, but Leighton Baines had proved every bit as loyal as Evertonians had hoped; James McCarthy, Gareth Barry and, most spectacularly of all Romelu Lukaku, had agreed to join (though he cannot play this weekend) and West Brom had parted with almost £6m for perma-sub Victor Anichebe.
In short, manager Roberto Martinez and chairman Bill Kenwright had played a blinder.
The mood at Goodison should be buoyant, then, when the Z-Cars theme blares out and Everton emerge to take on Chelsea.
If Everton grasp that mood and play the kind of high tempo, in-your-face football that has served them so well in the past, then the excitement will only escalate, much to Chelsea's discomfort.
If, instead, Everton play the kind of measured, slow-paced, possession-is-all game that turned 64% of the ball into 50% of the goals in their first three games, then there may be a feeling that an opportunity is being missed.
Everton are certainly learning to keep the ball; Chelsea will hope that they have not yet mastered quite what to do with it.

The London side have no fresh injury problems.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Chelsea were the only team to beat Everton at Goodison Park in last season's Premier League.
The Blues did the double over Everton last season but before that, they had won just one of the previous eight league meetings (W1, D4, L2).
Chelsea have won just one of their last five Premier League games at Everton (W1, D1, L3).
Everton's Steven Pienaar has scored in two of the last three meetings between the sides, while Frank Lampard got both Chelsea's goals when they came from behind to win 2-1 at Goodison Park last season.
Fernando Torres ended a five-month Premier League goal drought when the teams last met in May - it remains his only Premier League goal of 2013..
Everton
No team had more than Everton's 15 draws in last season's top flight - and the Toffees have begun the new campaign in similar fashion, with three draws.
Roberto Martinez has won just one of his last 11 games as a manager in the Barclays Premier League (W1, D6, L4).
The Toffees have averaged the highest possession figure in the 2013-14 Premier League season so far (64.1%).
The Toffees have averaged 519 passes per game so far under Roberto Martinez in the Premier League - up from 416 per game last season under David Moyes.
Chelsea
Chelsea won their first two league matches but drew with Manchester United last time out. Jose Mourinho began his first spell at the club with four consecutive wins (including one against United), and was unbeaten in his first eight league matches in charge.
Only West Ham (6) and Everton (5) have allowed fewer opposition shots on target than Chelsea (8) so far this season.
All 10 of the scoring opportunities Eden Hazard has created for his team-mates this season have come from open play.

MATCH PREVIEW
After the international break, the Premier League returns in earnest and I'm very much looking forward to this clash at White Hart Lane.
Although generally their away form has been very poor, Norwich have an excellent recent record at Tottenham and have picked up four points from their last two visits there.
So it's a ground they approach with no fear under manager Chris Hughton, himself of course a Spurs legend, and I thought they looked very impressive in their last outing against Southampton in which their new summer acquisitions shone.
It was an unprecedented summer of spending by the Canaries with the likes of Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Leroy Fer arriving, but it was of course dwarfed by Tottenham's extraordinary transfer activity.
£108m worth of players have arrived at White Hart Lane and work now begins in earnest for Andre Villas-Boas and his coaching staff to find the best way of moulding this galaxy of new stars into a cohesive team.
It's a process that could take a long time, but Tottenham fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of seeing club record signing Erik Lamela and Danish playmaker Cristian Eriksen at the Lane for the first time.
Norwich's new players have settled quickly and one man who has already been working his magic is Nathan Redmond, who has started the season like a house on fire. Such has been his impact since arriving from Birmingham that there is talk of the 19-year old earning a full England call-up like Tottenham's Andros Townsend did for the recent World Cup qualifiers. Should they both start it will be interesting to see who wins that battle of the men out wide.
This is Norwich's first real test this season and it will be interesting how they measure up to this new look Spurs team. They won't be overawed and I'm expecting a great game with chances at both ends.
Norwich were undefeated in all three matches they played against Tottenham last season. They drew 1-1 in both league games and beat Spurs 2-1 in the League Cup fourth round - their first win against Tottenham at Carrow Road since 1991.
The Canaries have a good recent record at White Hart Lane. As well as last season's draw they won 2-1 there in the 2011-12 season - and have lost just two of six Premier League visits to the Lilywhites.
Only against Manchester United (nine) and Liverpool (eight) have Norwich lost more games in Premier League history than against Tottenham (six).
This is their 62nd meeting in all competitions. Tottenham have won 26, Norwich 19 and there have been 16 draws.
Tottenham
Tottenham's defeat to Arsenal was their first loss since losing to Fulham back in March - 10 matches ago.
They have won 10 of their last 14 home games in the Premier League, losing just one (D3).
Going into the weekend, only Everton have had more shots than Tottenham's 42 this season but they have still not yet scored from open play. Brazilian midfielder Paulinho has had 11 of those shots, which is more than any other player without scoring.
After three matches, they are yet to be caught offside once.
Departed star Gareth Bale had a hand in 38% of Tottenham's goals last season (25 of 66; scoring 21 and assisting four).
Norwich
Norwich may have lost only one of 11 Premier League games at Carrow Road in 2013, but they have won just one of their 10 away matches this year (v Man City).
Nathan Redmond has dribbled past more players (13) than any other top-flight player this season.
Another new signing, Leroy Fer, continued his strong start at the club and made eight of Norwich's 29 tackles against Southampton in their last match.
Ricky van Wolfswinkel has committed more fouls (10) than any other player this season in the Premier League.

MATCH PREVIEW
Paolo Di Canio's appearance and every subsequent touch was unsurprisingly booed during his generous turnout for Steve Harper's testimonial match at St James' Park on Wednesday. Unless Sunderland's results improve quickly, it's a sound he might start hering on home turf too.
One point from the first three games of the season is a miserable return so far, but a slow start shouldn't be wholly unexpected with so many new players brought in at once.
By the end of the transfer window the newcomers count stood at 14, with nine already having played a part. Two more are likely to be involved here, with Ki Sung-Yueng and Fabio Borini loaned in from Swansea and Liverpool respectively.
If they get their debuts against Arsenal they'll do well to upstage the new man in the Gunners ranks, with German midfield maestro Mesut Ozil set for his Premier League bow. At £42.5 million, Arsene Wenger's only major signing of the summer cost well over twice as much as all of Sunderland's put together!
His abilities are well known, as are his assist statistics over the last five years (see below), and there seems to be genuine disbelief amongst some at Arsenal that they've got him AND some at Real Madrid that he was allowed to leave.
Assists in top five European leagues during last five seasons
Ovier Giroud - the club's only currently fit senior striker and in fine goalscoring form - must have a permanent grin at the thought of service from Ozil in addition to the help he already gets from Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott.
What a contrast to the Arsenal mood from just four weeks ago after their opening-day defeat to Aston Villa. What a difference a signing makes - even before he's played!
Sunderland's mood very much depends on how soon their signings can gel, and how well they tackle their next seven home league games - Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham. Seven points would be magnificent.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Sunderland's only win in their last 19 league meetings with Arsenal came at the Stadium of Light in November 2009, when Darren Bent scored the decisive goal.
The Black Cats have only scored two first-half goals in the 24 Premier League meetings between the clubs and have never been ahead at the interval.
However, they did beat Arsenal 2-0 in the fifth round of the FA Cup in February 2012.
Sunderland
Sunderland's two Premier League goals this term have both been headers, meaning they have already matched their tally of headed goals in the 2012-13 season.
The Black Cats won two of their first three games under Paolo Di Canio, but since then have claimed three points from seven league matches (D3, L4).
They have won only two Premier League games at the Stadium of Light in 2013 (against West Ham in January and Everton in April).
After taking on Arsenal, Sunderland have home games against Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham. Last season the Black Cats collected five points from those corresponding seven fixtures.
Arsenal
The Gunners have won six successive Premier League away games for only the second time. It is their best form since winning their final eight away matches in the 2001-02 season.
Olivier Giroud has yet score a Premier League goal outside of London, with 12 of his 14 strikes netted at the Emirates Stadium.
Only Fulham (21) have allowed their opponents more shots on target in the Premier League this season than Arsenal (17).
The Gunners have conceded two goals in the final 15 minutes of Premier League games this season - as many as they let in during the entire 2012-13 season.

MATCH PREVIEW
The honeymoon period for Manuel Pellegrini will be over if he fails to lead Manchester City to a first Premier League win at the Britannia Stadium.
Having lost at Cardiff, Pellegrini knows another defeat would cast doubts on his credibility as a potential title-winning manager. But standing in the way is Mark Hughes, who is still embittered by his dismissal from Manchester City four years ago.
Pellegrini has changed the visitors' style a little, with the result that his side carry more aerial threat. They have had more headed attempts on goal than any other top-flight club and have netted three - compared to just six headed goals in total last term.
Alvaro Negredo, who has scored seven headers since the start of last season, will be a particular danger in Stoke's land of the giants.
The £20m striker is relatively fresh too, after playing just 20 minutes for Spain this week. But the effect of the international break is bound to deplete the energy of others.
Manchester City had 12 major players away, including Argentine pair Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta, while Stoke duo Geoff Cameron and Wilson Palacios were in action for the USA and Honduras respectively.
The corresponding fixture last season also followed an international break, and Stoke looked mentally sharper as the sides played out a fourth successive 1-1 draw between the sides at the Britannia.
They go into this match looking for a fourth win on the spin in all competitions for the first time since February 2008. It would give them their best Premier League start and Mark Hughes his best ever managerial start.
He's improved their passing success rate, but goals are still at a premium. As a team that rarely dominates possession (they haven't done so since March), set-pieces will again provide their greatest threat.
Manchester City's defence was haphazard at Cardiff last month - if they're as bad again, another upset could be on.
Stoke's spirit could see them hold on for a point in a home fixture they have not lost in the top flight since September 1981.
But I have a feeling Manchester City will triumph in the Potteries in the league for the first time since Gerard Wiekens' winner in the third tier in 1999.
MATCH FACTS

Stoke have never lost a Premier League game at home to Manchester City (W1, D4), although the visitors did win 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium in an FA Cup fourth round tie in January.
The last four league fixtures between the sides on Stoke turf have ended 1-1.
Manchester City's last league win at Stoke was a 1-0 victory in January 1999.
Stoke City
Mark Hughes has already picked up more points in three league games as Stoke boss (six) than he did during his 12 matches as QPR manager last season (four).
Jermaine Pennant's winner at West Ham was his first league goal for 846 days (since scoring against Arsenal on 8 May 2011). Pennant has not finished on the losing side in the 12 Premier League games in which he has scored (10 wins, two draws).
The Potters are chasing a third successive league win. The last time they won three on the trot was between November and December 2012, when they beat Fulham, Newcastle and West Brom.
Manchester City
Manchester City substitutes have scored in each of their opening three Premier League fixtures. The only previous time this has happened was in 2004-05, when Arsenal replacements netted in their first five games.

MATCH PREVIEW
This clash will have to go some to match the drama of their last meeting - the 2-2 draw that secured Hull's last-gasp promotion to the Premier League .
Cardiff were able to bask in the glory of their already-confirmed Championship title in May. There'll be no such relaxation on Saturday with both sides no doubt fancying a crucial three points at the KC Stadium.
Two weeks ago, I commentated for Irish television on Cardiff's goalless draw against Everton, which took Malky Mackay's side onto four points from their opening three games of the season. It wasn't a classic by any means, but the manner of the win over Manchester City in their previous match isn't going to happen every week.
Hull have scored only one goal in their three Premier League matches so far, but the quality of their performance at Manchester City last time out has been noted by many.
Both have been busy in strengthening their squad - Hull with 11 signings and Cardiff eight.
I've seen a lot of Cardiff's record signing Gary Medel playing for Chile, and he seems to have settled quickly to life in the Premier League. His encounter with Hull's Tom Huddlestone may well be the key to the result. Fraizer Campbell, after his excellent start to the season, will be sure to keep the Hull defence on full alert.
Saturday's clash could yet be defined by the respective goalkeepers with Hull's Steve Harper, and Cardiff's Joe Lewis, on standby to deputise for Allan McGregor and David Marshall respectively.
It's been quite a week for Harper. The former Newcastle man, 20 years at St James' Park before his summer move to Hull, had a testimonial on Wednesday night with all the proceeds going to different charities in the north-east.
If McGregor is ruled out, Harper will not want for an incentive to be at his best - Hull travel to St James' next weekend.
MATCH FACTS

Cardiff have won four of their last seven games against Hull.
However, the Bluebirds have claimed victory in just one of their previous seven away games against the Tigers (a 2-0 win in February 2011).
The sides met on the final day of the 2012-13 season, when a 2-2 draw ultimately ensured Hull claimed the second automatic promotion spot behind Championship winners Cardiff.
Hull City
Including last season, Hull have failed to score in five of their previous seven league games (W1, D2, L4).

They have won two of their last 16 Premier League games (W2, D3, L11).
Cardiff City
The Bluebirds have drawn seven of their last 10 league games.
Having drawn 0-0 with Everton last time out, they have the chance to record back-to-back clean sheets in the top flight for the first time since April 1957.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Cardiff have won four of their last seven games against Hull.
However, the Bluebirds have claimed victory in just one of their previous seven away games against the Tigers (a 2-0 win in February 2011).
The sides met on the final day of the 2012-13 season, when a 2-2 draw ultimately ensured Hull claimed the second automatic promotion spot behind Championship winners Cardiff.
Hull City
Including last season, Hull have failed to score in five of their previous seven league games (W1, D2, L4).
The Tigers are looking to win back-to-back home games in the top flight for the first time.
The Bluebirds kept 18 clean sheets last season - the most in the Championship, ahead of Brighton (17) and Hull (16).

Fulham V West Brom Barclays Premier League Match 14 -September 2013. Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg could return after suffering a shoulder injury on his debut last month.
Aaron Hughes is a doubt with a thigh problem that saw him withdraw from Northern Ireland's squad in midweek, and Kieran Richardson is still out.
New West Brom signings Stephane Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano could well start, though Victor Anichebe lacks match fitness.Watch Fulham V West Brom Live, Watch Fulham V West Brom Live Stream, Watch Fulham V West Brom Free Live Stream, Watch Fulham V West Brom Online, Watch Fulham V West Brom Online Free, Fulham V West Brom Live, Fulham V West Brom live stream Online.
Midfielder James Morrison (groin) is a doubt.
MATCH PREVIEW
Even at this early stage, these two clubs will see this as a fixture for a potential welcome lift. This season is yet to ignite for either, after sluggish endings to the last campaign. Fulham have only won twice in their last 11 league matches and West Brom just once in their previous 12.
Three of Fulham's next four matches are at Craven Cottage, with Cardiff and Stoke following West Brom's visit. Those are the type of games Martin Jol will know he needs to get points from, to build a base to improve on last season's 12th place finish. His team have lost their last five Premier League matches at home and that needs to be addressed.
He'll hope Dimitar Berbatov can recapture some of his finer moments from last season, where he scored three times in two matches against the Baggies, and that Darren Bent can build on his debut goal against Arsenal.
The Fulham manager comes up against the club he played for 79 times, having only lost once to them in 10 meetings as a manager.
His opposite number Steve Clarke returns to the ground where he suffered his first managerial defeat a year ago. His business on deadline day was necessary and he'll be quietly desperate for his new boys to hit the ground running to help them to a first goal and victory of the season.
New club record signing Stephane Sessegnon has the potential to really improve the team's goal threat. Victor Anichebe, like Scott Sinclair, will feel he has a point to prove while with Long still at the club, more to come from Anelka and the emerging talent of Berahino, they collectively have to replace the 17 league goals that Romelu Lukaku scored last season.
West Brom's last league win at Fulham came in 1967. An end to that run, would help them begin to look forward again.
Fulham are unbeaten against West Brom in their past five matches, which have all been in the Premier League (W3, D2).
West Brom have never won at Fulham in the Premier League (in seven attempts).
The Baggies last won a league match at Craven Cottage in October 1967 (a 2-1 win). However, they did beat Fulham in west London in the 2005 League Cup sixth round - 3-2 after extra time.
Fulham
The Cottagers have lost seven of their last nine Premier League matches.
They have the same record after three games as they did last season (won one, lost two) - but had scored seven last term, compared to just twice this time around.
Darren Bent is the eighth player to score for six different clubs in the Premier League. The others are Nick Barmby, Marcus Bent, Craig Bellamy, Andy Cole, Peter Crouch, Les Ferdinand and Robbie Keane.
West Brom
West Brom remain winless in seven Premier League matches and failed to score in their opening three top-flight matches of the season for the first time since 1972-73.
The Baggies claimed 33 of 49 points in the first half of the 2012-13 season, but since then have taken just 17 points from 22 games (including this season).
Steve Clarke's side have had just four shots on target in their opening three games.

Loan signing Loic Remy could make his first start, while Steven Taylor and Cheick Tiote are available again.
MATCH PREVIEW
Ask any neutral which of these sides has made the better start to the new season, and I reckon the majority would suggest Aston Villa - but the Premier League table reveals a different story. Newcastle are a point better off with four compared to Villa's three. So why does the picture look rosy in Birmingham while it's all fog on the Tyne?
Part of the answer is to do with the respective opposition these clubs have faced and the quality of the performances. Villa have faced three from the top four, narrowly losing to Chelsea and Liverpool after their terrific 3-1 win away to Arsenal on the opening day.
Meanwhile, Newcastle lost their opener heavily 4-0 at Manchester City, then slugged out a forgettable goalless draw at St James' Park against West Ham. Only a Hatem Ben Arfa wonder strike prevented the same outcome last time out against Fulham.
Want-away midfielder Yohan Cabaye came on as a substitute in that game for his first appearance of the campaign. The Frenchman got the winner when these sides met at Villa Park last January, and getting him focussed and committed to the cause again will be crucial if Alan Pardew is to steer Newcastle away from dangerous waters. Unhappy with a lack of new arrivals, the Toon Army are restless again.
In contrast, Paul Lambert was able to ride the storm threatening to swamp him last winter thanks to the understanding of the Villa faithful. They accepted his blueprint for the future, a faith in youth underlined during the recent transfer window when all seven of his signings were aged 24 or under. Last man in on deadline day itself was Libor Kozak from Lazio.
He scored against Italy for the Czech Republic on Tuesday night and should make his Premier League bow in this one. At £7m he represents Lambert's costliest new recruit, but if he can emulate the success of the manager's last £7m acquisition nobody will be complaining.
Christian Benteke goes from strength to strength - 23 goals last season, four already this. Keeping him in claret and blue is arguably the best bit of business any club managed over the summer.
After a run of four Premier League wins at Villa Park against Newcastle, Aston Villa have failed to beat the Magpies on home soil in their past two league encounters.
Last season Newcastle won 2-1 at Villa Park, with goals from Papiss Cisse and Yohan Cabaye.
The biggest Premier League win in matches between the two clubs came when Newcastle walloped Villa 6-0 at St James' Park in August 2010.
Aston Villa
Villa have scored four goals from 11 shots on target so far this season (while Newcastle have scored just once from 10 shots on target).
But Villa have conceded a goal in each of their last 12 Premier League matches at Villa Park.
The Villains have scored four goals after three Premier League games this season. At the same stage last term they had just two.
Newcastle
All four of Newcastle's last four league wins have been by a single-goal margin.
Three of Hatem Ben Arfa's last four Premier League goals have come from outside the box in open play - the other was a penalty.
In Newcastle's last match (against Fulham), Loic Remy collected his first ever Premier League assist.
In that match, the Magpies had 25 shots - the joint-most of any team in a single game this term.
Defenders Nathan Baker and Antonio Luna may also feature after recent knocks, but Charles N'Zogbia remains a long-term absentee with an Achilles injury.

MATCH PREVIEW
It's very early days of course, but it's been a mixed bag for 'new era'-Manchester United so far this season as they prepare to face Crystal Palace, a team they've never lost to in eight previous meetings in the Premier League.
Four points from the opening nine is their lowest total in four seasons and this match comes after they failed to score in back-to-back league games for the first time since 2007. The serene and impressive start at Swansea has been followed by a stalemate with Chelsea and then a narrow defeat at Anfield, leaving David Moyes with the same record from his first three league games as his predecessor at Old Trafford.
This, however, is a game that every United fan will expect three points from against their newly-promoted opponents.
I thought Palace did fairly well when I saw them against Tottenham on the opening weekend of the season in a 1-0 defeat at Selhurst Park, a day most memorable for Ian Holloway's post-match meltdown - which has cost him an £18,000 fine and two-match touchline ban, starting with this match.
The narrow loss to Spurs wasn't harsh, but they battled hard against one of the top sides and Kagisho Dikgacoi brought a good save from Hugo Lloris near the end as they pushed for a late equaliser.
A 2-1 defeat at Stoke, after taking the lead, and then a confidence boosting 3-1 home success over Paolo Di Canio's Sunderland are the only other things we've got to go on so far - it's a decent enough start.
When he was in charge of Blackpool in the Premier League, Ian Holloway's team had a real go against Manchester United... scoring twice both home and away against them only to end up losing the two games. A win here with his latest club really would be headline news. Interestingly enough though, Crystal Palace were actually victorious the last time they played at Old Trafford - 2-1 after extra time in a Carling Cup tie a couple of years ago.
Whatever happens in this one, we'll miss Holloway's energetic and intense presence on the touchline.
Crystal Palace have never beaten Manchester United in eight Premier League meetings, losing six and drawing twice.
The Eagles have not won a league match at Old Trafford since a 2-1 victory in December 1989.
But they did emerge winners from their last fixture at Old Trafford, prevailing 2-1 after extra time in the League Cup fifth round in November 2011.
United have won 529 Premier League matches, compared to Crystal Palace's sum total of 38.
Manchester United
Four points from a possible nine is Manchester United's lowest points total after three games since 2008-09 (also four points).
This is the first time Manchester United have failed to score in back-to-back Premier League games since 2007 (between 9 May and 12 August 2007 they failed to score in three on the spin).
David Moyes has matched Sir Alex Ferguson's record of one win, one draw and one defeat from his opening three league matches.
Crystal Palace
Palace have three points from three games this season. In their last top-flight season (2004-05), they picked up only one from their opening six matches.
In their last season in the Premier League (2004-05), Crystal Palace scored 11 penalties - a joint-record in the competition. Palace also scored more penalties than any other side in the top four divisions last season (13 - including the playoffs).
In their last match (against Sunderland), 12 of Palace's 18 shots came from outside the box.
Danny Gabbidon scored his first Premier League goal against Sunderland. He has now scored in all four English league divisions.
The Eagles have taken the lead in each of the last two fixtures (they also led against Stoke before losing).
