 Movie Info:
Henry McCarthy (MARK POLISH), the 30-something author of the popular 80s-themed novel How Lionel Got Me Laid, returns to his suburban hometown of Sacramento to deliver the commencement speech at his former high school. Despite his success as an author Henry’s return home has sparked all of the youthful dreams, desires and particularly disappointments he's never quite gotten over, specifically his unrequited affection for the girl who is now the local pharmacist: the elusive Scarlet Smith (WINONA RYDER).
Between run-ins with the outcast friends he left behind Big Girl (SEAN ASTIN) and Wino (JOSH HOLLOWAY), the school principal (CHEVY CHASE) and a seductive senior, Shasta O’Neil (HILARY DUFF) who clearly has the hots for him, Henry is sent spinning through a time warp that incites all the old emotions and challenges of the world he grew up in. Teetering between unsettling memories of his teenage past and his all too uncertain adult future, Henry can only hope to ”Stay Cool” and make it, once again, to graduation day.

Storyline:
The film centers on a successful author who is forced to confront an unrequited high school crush when he returns home to deliver a commencement address to graduating seniors. Shasta O'Neil, a sexy high school senior flirts with the visiting author and invites him to the prom. The film is described as a "knowing-your-age comedy".

Too stupid, 8 September 2010
I got this movie on the basis of its IMDb score and the one big name - Winona Ryder. I have to say - IMDb voters, you let me down this time. No way is this worth 7.6 (edit - my faith is restored in IMDb voters - the rating has dropped considerably, now) .
The premise is reasonable and could have been made into a really good movie but, oh dear, there are far too many stupid plot lines. Henry McCarthy goes back home to give the commencement speech at his old high school. He is picked up by his two best friends from the airport (one of whom is Josh Holloway - I didn't like him in Lost and I really didn't like him here) and then come the clichés: served coffee by one of his former classmates, stopped by the police while drink-driving - guess what, another former classmate who lets him go with a pat on the back.
The idea that the principal (Chevy Chase with a plaster on his nose (why??? - it wasn't funny)) would treat his former pupil turned important author as a naughty schoolboy was stupid. So too was the fact that Scarlet's boyfriend, the coach, acted like a jealous 18 years old. Stupid, also, was the police involvement after the prom - is there really an offence of having a private party with underage drinking in the States (maybe so, but surely not one of being a 38 year old man in the company of an 18 year old girl). And so it went on (do they leave show houses open at night? If his Dad was so keen on his car why didn't he run it through a carwash before returning it?)
When the commencement speech and dénouement with Scarlet did come they were both underwhelming.
All in all I think this film's rating should languish in the sub 6 territory (my personal watershed for whether a film is worth watching).

Once you've seen Gus Van Sant's Restless, you realize the distributor shuffle the film has done over the past several months says a lot about what kind of film it is. Is it a movie better suited as a specialty film housed at Sony Pictures Classics, or is it more of a slightly comical, but more serious romantic drama for Columbia Pictures? Sony chose to hand it over to the former after it originally had a January release date with the latter. Do they have it figured out?
The dilemma Sony faced is represented in this tonally conflicted drama that never really seems to figure itself out. Just when you think its found its way it takes a left, carrying only fragments of its former self with it. By the time you get to the end you've been jerked in so many directions there's very little left to take with you. Some could argue this is a result of the film falling in line with the path of its protagonists, and I'd agree, but it isn't a path that necessarily ends up leading anywhere of much consequence, and certainly not one we haven't traveled before.
The story revolves around Anna (Mia Wasikowska) and Enoch (Henry Hopper), a pair of late-teens lost in their ways for different reasons, though both are confronting the demons that death beholds. Enoch crashes funerals as he's still trying to cope with the loss of his parents who died in a car accident — one that almost took his life as well. And, as if that wasn't enough, he spends most of his time with Hiroshi (Ryo Kase), the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot who's been with him since his parent's death. Anna's complications are a bit more simple, but far more dire. She's just been told the tumor growing in her brain gives her only three more months to live.

I brought my 8 year old daughter with me to preview Dolphin Tale and we both LOVED it! This is a perfect family movie and I couldn't recommend it enough. The message was positive and although there were some heavy topics addressed - it wasn't over the top... you leave feeling good with lots to think about. This isn't just a movie that encourages you to never give up. It did a great job bringing up real issues like self-image, pride, acceptance of those who are different, self-worth, homeschooling, importance of family, the power of a good family, the value of family. It addresses family relationships, friendship with those who are different, public school issues... oh, and so much more! This movie opens opportunity for discussion with your kids OR you can just go and enjoy the story. Can't wait to see it again in September!

1) STRAW DOGS Kicks Ass!,
19 May 2011

I caught a screening of STRAW DOGS last week. Rod Lurie directed a tight film that kicks major ass.
"Firstly, Lurie has assembled a dynamite cast: James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgard, James Woods and even Walton Goggins (who is absolute nitro-glycerin in FX's Justified) has a small role. The fact that Lurie was able to attract this cast speaks volumes for his reputation. Is this an award-worthy film? No. Is it a good time at the movies? Hell yes! "A Hollywood screenwriter (Marsden) and his wife (Bosworth) are moving into a home in his wife's small rural hometown so he can write his new script, Stalingrad, in peace and tranquility. She had a small role in a TV show he once wrote but we get the impression she's washed up now (she's one of the many Straw Dogs in the film, a.k.a people who peaked to early but are now hollow and easily knocked-around and broken). "Marsden is fantastic in the film. In fact, he's never been better. He exhudes kindness and decency. He plays the soft city boy with a heart. "The happy couple settle into their countryside mansion in the middle of a very isolated forest. In town, they run into Bosworth's old flame (Skarsgard). Skarsgard is everything that Marsden is not -- tall, rugged, manly and dangerous. The quintessential bad boy that all girls are attracted to in their teens but eventually grow out of... or do they?
"There are two themes running through the film. The first (and I'm not too sure I agree with this) is that a man can only be a man if he resorts to violence in order to defend his wife. Lurie also straddles a dangerous line in the film by presenting us with a wife who is a provoker...

2) Straw Dogs Review:
Dull, unnecessary remake, 23 June 2011
Author: johnno-17 from Greece

Sam Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs" remains a most disturbing, morally ambiguous confrontation between the brute code of uneducated farmboys with the complex attempts at rationalization by a sophisticated, neurotic, hyper-educated urban college professor attempting to escape the responsibilities of living in an increasingly complex world. It is also a magnificently constructed motion picture, elegantly photographed, brilliantly edited, hauntingly scored, with powerhouse performances from every actor.
This wholly unnecessary remake on the other hand is amateurish swill - banal photography, drama-class acting (and why not? all the characters have been reduced to caricature), and soap-opera rewriting. It's basically a television movie with some sex and violence thrown in for the fan-boy crowd. It's even got the requisite car-chases, and supposedly pointed dialog about adultery and motivations, blah blah blah.
Graceless, visually dull, with no sympathetic characters, but a lotta boom! crash! foe those who think loud noises and pyrotechnics make up for lack of intelligence and imagination.

Hollywood Movie We Were Here 2011 Watch Trailer Preview Story Cast And Crew

Storyline:
A deep and reflective look at the arrival and impact of AIDS in San Francisco and how individuals rose to the occasion during the first years of this unimaginable crisis.

Movie Plot Summary:
Documents the coming of what was called the “Gay Plague” in the early 1980s. It illuminates the profound personal and community issues raised by the AIDS epidemic as well as the broad political and social upheavals it unleashed. It offers a cathartic validation for the generation that suffered through, and responded to, the onset of AIDS. It opens a window of understanding to those who have only the vaguest notions of what transpired in those years. It provides insight into what society could, and should, offer its citizens in the way of medical care, social services, and community support.
2011 marks 30 years since AIDS descended. Like an unrelenting hurricane, the epidemic roiled San Francisco for two decades and only began granting some reprieve with medical advancements in the late 90s. The death years of AIDS left the City ravaged and exhausted, yet, as in most of the developed world, the worst seems past. Though thousands are still living with HIV, and new infections continue at an alarming rate, the relentless suffering of the 80s and 90s has given way to a kind of calm, and, understandably, a degree of willful forgetfulness. WE WERE HERE utilizes San Francisco’s experience with AIDS to open up an overdue conversation both about the history of the epidemic, and the lessons to be learned from it.

Watch Your Step as You "Fall" in Love With 'One Fall',

by gregg-190
One Fall tells the story of James Bond (I love this…reminds me of a name pun I employed in one of my screenplays), played by Marcus, who miraculously survived a 200 foot fall. After a very brief recovery (that's an understatement), he disappeared from the city of One Fall without explanation. He even left behind his beautiful fiancé. He later returns to One Fall to face the music and use the gift he undeniably has. However, healing people doesn't come cheap. There's that moral dilemma I was talking about two paragraphs above. What would you do if you had this power? Would you exploit it or use it for greater good? James wrestles with this and more as people all around him, even loved ones, start to push him away. They can't understand him. To them, the man who fell never came back. James must come to grip with who he is, why he survived that fall and what he is meant to do in this world with his gift. Again…wow! The story is not only profound in my opinion, but very powerful, deep and touching. (Read the full review at whysoblu dot com)

Movie Review:
The rare blockbuster that is not just loud on spectacle, but also rich in heart and spirit,
22 January 2011
by moviexclusive
The 1982 gongfu classic "Shaolin" introduced Jet Li to the world, but there is no breakout star to be found here in Benny Chan's take on the famed birthplace of Shaolin martial arts. No matter really- though Heavenly King Andy Lau may not have the moves or the agility to match Jet Li, his leading man performance here is no less terrific. Indeed, what Andy lacks in the physical department, he more than amply makes up for with his dramatic chops, delivering a deeply moving performance as the arrogant and scheming warlord Hou Jie who undergoes a 180-degree transformation under the tutelage of the Shaolin monks.
This transformation is at the heart of Benny Chan's film, which differentiates itself splendidly from the recent crop of period epics with a generous infusion of Buddhist teachings. These nuggets of wisdom elevate "Shaolin" into a surprisingly thoughtful film, meditating on the fruitlessness of anger, violence and hatred, and preaching ever persuasiveness the merits of peace, compassion and love. Non-believers however need not fear- Benny's sure hand never lets the film become sanctimonious, instead emphasising the universal truths of these teachings and demonstrating their truism through a heartfelt yarn.
Written by no less than four writers, the story is a gripping one of repentance and renewal set amidst a time when China was torn apart by internal strife and threatened by foreign powers. General Hou Jie was one such local warlord, his hunger for power matched by that of his second-in-command, the equally scheming Cao Man (Nicholas Tse). A compelling opening sequence introduces Hou Jie and Cao Man as the despotic men they are (at least at the start), chasing an enemy right into the compounds of the Shaolin temple and paying no heed to the abbot's words to let him save the dying man...

Hollywood Movie Tanner Hall 2011 Watch Trailer Review Story Cast And Crew

Storyline:
Tanner Hall is a vivid peek into the private world of an all-girls boarding school. In a cozy, but run down New England, the knot of adolescent complexity is unraveled through the coming of age stories of four teen-age girls.

Movie Plot Summary:
As Fernanda (Rooney Mara) enters her senior year at Tanner Hall—a sheltered boarding school in New England—she’s faced with unexpected changes in her group of friends when a childhood acquaintance, the charismatic yet manipulative trouble-maker, Victoria (Georgia King) appears. Shy and studious, Fernanda is usually the voice of reason among her friends—adventurous and sexy Kate (Brie Larsen) and tomboy Lucasta (Amy Ferguson)—but when she begins a complicated friendship with Gio (Tom Everett Scott) an older family friend, she decides it’s finally time to take some risks. Jealous of Fernanda’s exciting relationship, Victoria begins to sabotage Fernanda’s plans and plots to publicly humiliate her. Meanwhile, Lucasta struggles with her newfound feelings towards another classmate and mischievous Kate is too preoccupied with making her teachers nervous to pay much attention to her actual classes. However, as each of the girls flirt with adulthood, they realize they still need each other to help get through their first grown-up decisions—and the consequences they bring.

Movie Review:
"Tanner Hall" is a coming of age snooze fest.,
13 April 2010
by MovieManMenzel
"Tanner Hall" was a film I heard nothing about before seeing it listed on the Gen Arts website. After seeing it listed on their website, I decided to research and see who was in it and the basic premise. After reading the plot, seeing who was in the film, and then hearing it was premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, it peaked my interest enough to want to see it. I decided to attend the east coast premiere of "Tanner Hall" at the Gen Art Film Festival in NYC on Monday April 12, 2010 and this is my thoughts on the film.
The basic plot of "Tanner Hall" focuses on four girls at a private boarding school in New England. Two of these girls have been friends since childhood and the other two are just friends from the school. Together they share their feelings and emotions in a coming of age tale that you will soon forget as soon as you leave the theater...
I really wish I didn't have to be so harsh on this film especially since I saw it at a festival with most of the cast sitting around me but truth be told I really did not like this film at all. In a world where coming of age films are a dime a dozen, a writer or director need to make a film that really stands out from the others. That's where "Tanner Hall's" problem begins as there is nothing even remotely new or interesting about this film. When watching independent coming of age story you are expecting something deeper and more powerful. We do not get that at all. What the audience gets is such a lackluster story with a lot of one-dimensional characters and lack of emotion.
I think the main problem lies on the writing, which is just awful. The characters in this film are all stereotypical and one dimensional. You have the horny teacher, the cheating husband, the slutty school girl, the depressed school girl, the love confused school girl, and of course the sexually confused school girl. None of these characters are written with much depth. I feel bad saying it since it was written and directed by two friends Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana Von Furstenberg who seemed extremely passionate about the film. To me everything from the story to the stereotypical characters to the lack of character development is what really hurt this film. I felt maybe if these two passionate ladies didn't write the film but direct it or maybe vice versa it would have been a lot better.
The other issue I had was some of the actors...I don't know who's idea it was to put Chris Kattan in this film but man was he awful. This guy can barely pull off a comedy routine and this is coming from someone who somewhat enjoyed "Corky Romano" (yes I know it's a bad film...but I laughed for some reason) and they put him in a movie like this as the subtle comic relief. It just doesn't work. Also, why is Amy Sedaris in this film? What a useless role for her? She is such a gifted funny woman and in this film I just can't wait for her scene to end. Maybe it's just that the comedy aspect the directors/writers were trying to convey didn't fit the tone of the film...
