This unique alliance reached full bloom in the person of Enoch “Nucky” Johnson - the second of three bosses to head the Republican machine that dominated city politics and society.

The show was adapted from a book about historical criminal kingpin Enoch "Nucky" Johnson by Nelson Johnson entitled Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter of The Sopranos. Boardwalk Empire Volume 1: Music From the HBO Original Series was released on September 13, 2011. The soundtrack features music from seasons 1 and 2. The Prohibition-era soundtrack is composed of original music from the 1920s re-recorded by artists such as Regina Spektor, Loudon Wainwright III, Martha Wainwright, Catherine Russell, Nellie McKay and Leon Redbone. The show does not feature any original scoring; all music cues used in every single episode are authentic musical compositions and recordings from the 1920's. Many of the 1920 recordings used in Season One can be heard on the compilation album Whispering: Hits of 1920, released by Nexus in 2002. The title track of this CD, the Vincent Rose composition as performed by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, features prominently in the pilot episode. Since debuting, Boardwalk Empire has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. On the review aggregator website Metacritic, the first season scored 88/100 and the second season scored 81/100, both indicating "universal acclaim. Meanwhile, in Atlantic City, Jimmy and his partners broker a deal with George Remus for his “medicinal” alcohol before taking a break to see/hear the Dempsey fight. Margaret frets when Emily’s illness takes a turn for the worse; Dunn Purnsley orchestrates a worker’s strike at the Ritz; Waxey Gordon takes action against Manny Horvitz in Philadelphia; Randolph and Clifford Lathrop grill Halloran about Nucky’s past.
