MATCH PREVIEW

As Liverpool celebrate the birth of Bill Shankly - 100 years ago on Monday - the current Liverpool boss can enjoy the feeling of kicking off against a Manchester United team who are below them in the fledgling Premier League table.

Not that Brendan Rodgers would have enjoyed the tortuous passage past Notts County in the League Cup second round which has left him with a few injury conundrums; nor would he would have been grinning from ear-to-ear at the third draw which followed - Manchester United away.

However, Liverpool's start to the season has been impressive enough to suggest that they have a real chance of improving on a record of just one win over United in the last seven league meetings.

Daniel Sturridge, who turns 24 on Sunday, scored his first league goal for Liverpool at Old Trafford last season and has barely stopped scoring since - 15 in 19 appearances so far; if he's shifted out of position or even out of the team by a returning Luis Suarez next month you can expect Sturridge to be unhappy.

United's game against Chelsea on Monday may have been as serene and lifeless as the ship canal on a still summer's day, but this will be a tempest in comparison.

Defeat would be unpalatable, and with the game at Manchester City coming soon, it would leave David Moyes with little wriggle room as he accustoms himself to the contours of Sir Alex's shoes.

Home fans will know that Moyes has never won at Anfield - away fans will reflect that he's never been there with United. Both managers might reflect that getting a draw would not be the worst day's work they have ever done.

They both may also feel that the chance to forget about agents, deals and the transfer deadline for 90 minutes is more than welcome. With 11pm on Monday looming, that respite will not last…
