In season 2, everyone's favourite reluctant traveller is back in the departure lounge. But this time Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are sending Karl Pilkington around the world with a list of the ultimate things to do before you die. Armed with this definitive bucket list, Karl will be dispatched to far flung corners of the world to swim with dolphins, travel Route 66 and stay on a desert island, in an attempt to prove whether these so called 'things to do before you die' really are what they're cracked up to be. After seeing the Seven Wonders, Karl's not exactly eager to travel again, so he's only agreed to do another series if the rules change. Karl wants to choose where he goes and what he does from the Bucket List. Ricky and Steve are both happy to go along with Karl's wishes to get him through the departure gates. Once Karl's back on the road, they'll be back to their old tricks though, throwing in unwelcome surprises for Karl along the way to make sure he’s always pushed out of his comfort zone...
Season Info:
An Idiot Abroad is a travel documentary television series broadcast on Sky1, as well as a spin-off book published by Canongate Books, created by and featuring Karl Pilkington and his former radio show colleagues Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The second series returned on September 24, 2011 on Sky1 with 1.33 million viewers, slightly lower than series one, but it did give Sky1 its biggest audience of the multichannels. The debut of the second episode again topped the multichannel ratings for the second week with 1.07 million viewers watching on Sky1. The third episode was watched by 870,000 viewers. An Idiot Abroad charts Pilkington's reactions when visiting the New Seven Wonders of the World, as well as the situations he's placed in and cultural differences and idiosyncrasies in the countries he visits. It was stated by the show's producers that Pilkington has no prior warning about these situations. Gervais commented: "This is a (more real) documentary than most others you'll ever see on television. We don't plan it, he doesn't know what's going to happen." Though the New Seven Wonders of the World include the Colosseum in Rome, this is not one of Pilkington's destinations because Ricky and Stephen thought that Rome would have been too familiar to what he is used to; instead he visits the Great Pyramids in Egypt. The show was originally going to be called Karl Pilkington's Seven Wonders, but, as noted in the show, not many people would actually know who Karl Pilkington is, hence the more comical title. The second series shows Karl having to do "The Bucket List" (things to do before you die). Pilkington agreed to do a second series on the condition that he was to choose what he would do and that he got proper toilets. However to make sure the series stayed interesting, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant went behind Karl's back and have made surprises for him to make him hate it even more, so like the first series he had no idea about what was going to happen...
