MATCH PREVIEW

As commentators, we're often asked which has been the best match we've ever described. Having been privileged to have seen so many it's an almost impossible question to answer.

However, if anyone ever asks me what's the worst Premier League game I've ever witnessed, then without hesitation I'll respond with the dour goalless draw between Stoke and West Brom earlier this year!

It was eminently forgettable with few incidents - even the typically magnificent atmosphere generated by the fervent supporters at the Britannia Stadium was unable to rouse it from its slumber.

Though sometimes managers bemoan their team's position in the Match of the Day running order, both bosses that day were happy to admit they expected to be the last game on - and they were right.

Seven months on though, there are many reasons to be a great deal more optimistic this time around.

The visitors, for example, will come into it buoyed by an excellent four-game unbeaten run which included an impressive win at Old Trafford and a fully-deserved draw against current league leaders Arsenal.

Encouragingly, new signings Morgan Amalfitano and Stephane Sessegnon have begun to display the qualities for which they had been recruited. In addition, youngster Saido Berahino can already boast five first-team goals, most notably the winner against Manchester United.

By contrast, Stoke's need for a good performance stems from their recent stuttering form. A healthy seven points accrued from the first four games of Mark Hughes' reign promised much, only to be followed by three straight defeats. Just one goal scored in their last four matches is of particular concern.

Historically, this is one of Stoke's favourite fixtures, having only suffered one defeat in the eight Premier League meetings.

From a neutral perspective though, I'm just keen for it not to end goalless!
