In the first leg of the playoff West Ham grabbed a 2-0 win at Cardiff, leaving them in in control of their premier league destiny. Both goals came from Jack Collison who is still recovering from cartilage problems but is expected to start today.
West Ham assistant manager Neil McDonald hailed the new playoff system and the opportunity it provides the teams that play in it.
"I think the play-offs have been one of the best things that has been introduced to football along with three points,'' he said.
"It gives everybody a chance, it keeps the whole season going and, yes, it is slightly disappointing to finish third and so many points above fourth, [fifth and sixth] but we knew what was happening.
"We knew what the situation was and we've tried to put that to the back of our mind now.''
West Ham's opponents Cardiff City are facing a number of injuries that won't help their chances of digging out of the 2 goal deficit. Midfielder Cowie took a hit in the match on Thursday and, after sustaining a calf strain on the last match of the season against Crystal Palace, McNaughton will need to be assessed.
Cardiff has made it to the nPower Championship playoffs three years running but are yet to win the playoff. Last year they were bounced out of the semifinals by Reading and two year ago they fell to Blackpool in the final.
Cardiff manager Malky Mackay is trying to keep his team positive ahead of the match.
"Most people may now expect West Ham to make it through to the final - that could be a natural reaction I suppose.
"But myself and the team don't subscribe to that. We go into Monday afternoon trying to win the game.
"We have 90 minutes to score twice and, beyond that, to win the game. Right now we have a fighter's chance.''
