MATCH PREVIEW

The first big shock of the Premier League season was Cardiff's thrilling defeat of Manchester City.

It was a result as unexpected as it was welcome for most neutrals and particularly those who wanted proof that the seriously motivated can still sometimes put one over the seriously loaded with a little help from a raucous and cacophonous crowd.

Cardiff were excellent and clearly took Manchester City by surprise. They have been ambitious in the summer sales and the early signs are promising.

"Cardiff fans have been waiting to play in the top flight for a long time, and they realise that if they make it an intense atmosphere it will help their side. That was evident against City and it will be loud all year I'm sure.

That win over City was just the sort of performance and result that became Everton's speciality under David Moyes, when they would frequently bloody the noses of the Premier League's so-called elite.

It is much too early to judge as to whether or not Everton have lost that stubborn streak but Roberto Martinez has made a start which can only be described as 'ok'.

They could have beaten Norwich and should have beaten West Brom in their last Premier League fixture but two draws and a laboured League Cup win over Stevenage is hardly heady stuff.

Life for Martinez has not been made any easier by Moyes' determination to raid his old locker for some of the best bits of the team he built. You can hardly blame the new Manchester United manager but Evertonians will be dismayed if Baines and/or Fellaini are sold before Monday's transfer deadline.

Everton have not won a Premier League game away from home since January's trip to Newcastle, though they have drawn more than they have lost since then.

A first trip to play Cardiff in Wales since 1979 would be a good time to end that run and could really get Martinez off and running - but it will certainly not be easy.
