But has Roberto Mancini got it right in depending on the current squad to retain the title?. Balotelli's departure will leave a more harmonious dressing room. It'll also leave them short of striking cover at a time when goals have been hard to come by. Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez have just seven between them in the last nine league and cup games. The champs have been grinding out results with eight wins in their last 10 games but those victories have been built on the meanest defence in the land. For the first time ever they could keep five Premier League clean sheets in a row. But they are badly missing Yaya Toure, and are only just clinging to the coat tails of Manchester United. Additionally, this is an uncomfortable fixture for them. City have won just two of the last 17 meetings with Liverpool. As so often, Luis Suarez will be the key. He has eight goals in his last seven games and at times has been unplayable. He's bound to be in the spotlight for some reason and Liverpool have unfinished business. They were wretched in the 3-0 defeat at Eastlands last season. But which Liverpool will turn up? The team capable of capable of destroying Fulham, Norwich, QPR and Sunderland or the side that has looked so ill at ease against better opposition. They've yet to register a win against sides currently in the top half of the table. They've also failed to close out games away from home.A Liverpool win would be a wonderful achievement and it would have major repercussions on the title race. But let's be honest, City have only lost twice in 30 league games. They've dropped just 11 home points from a possible 114 over the last two years. It wouldn't be surprising if Liverpool score first and City have to battle back for a draw. But surely City can't lose a game of this importance on their own patch and if they win it then they'll be sending out a real signal of intent to Manchester United. It's a very significant game and it's too close to call.

Team News:
Manchester City are hopeful Matija Nastasic, who was only fit enough for the bench in midweek, will recover from a knee problem in time to start.
Captain Vincent Kompany may be out for a further three weeks, but Maicon and Micah Richards both hope to return from injury this month.
Liverpool's new signing Philippe Coutinho will not feature on Sunday.
Pepe Reina, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all returned from injury at Arsenal and should keep their places.

Head-to-head
