One of the most loved television series of all time is brought back to life with a stellar cast and a story full of scandal, romance and intrigue set against a sweeping historical backdrop. Set in 1936, "Upstairs Downstairs" follows the antics in the sumptuous home of the Hallam family. Set against a backdrop of the path to World War II, the programme then explores the differing lines of the rich family upstairs, and the servants who work below.
Storyline:
In 1936, Sir Hallam Holland and his pretty young wife Lady Agnes return from a diplomatic posting abroad and take up residence at 165 Eaton Place, formerly the home of the Bellamy family but vacant for several years. By chance, they ask Rose Buck, herself a long-time servant in the Bellamy household, to find them a suitable staff. In the end, Rose herself joins them as the Housekeeper. The 1930s are a difficult time in England. The Depression has taken its toll with high levels of unemployment. Fascism, which has become popular on the Continent in Italy and Germany, is also finding followers in the UK with Oswald Mosely's British Union of Fascists. Episode Summary:
After Lady Agnes returns home, she is determined to fix the rift in her marriage. Sir Hallam also wants to sort things out and does everything that he can to rectify his personal and professional mistakes. A surprising revelation though leaves the pair reeling and some turn of events change165 Eaton Place forever. As war approaches, Harry and Beryl face a race against time to get their affairs sorted out. Mr Pritchard leaves 165 Eaton Place in shame and Johnny is left to run the household.
