They soon added a family upstairs, as Marsh recognised "Servants have to serve somebody.In summer,they took this idea to Sagitta Productions, which was run by John Hawkesworth and John Whitney.They soon removed the comedy element, changed the setting to a large townhouse in Edwardian London and the title became Below Stairs.
Season Summary:
One of the most loved television series of all time is brought back to life with a stellar cast and a story full of scandal, romance and intrigue set against a sweeping historical backdrop. Set in 1936, "Upstairs Downstairs" follows the antics in the sumptuous home of the Hallam family. Set against a backdrop of the path to World War II, the programme then explores the differing lines of the rich family upstairs, and the servants who work below.
Storyline:
In 1936, Sir Hallam Holland and his pretty young wife Lady Agnes return from a diplomatic posting abroad and take up residence at 165 Eaton Place, formerly the home of the Bellamy family but vacant for several years. By chance, they ask Rose Buck, herself a long-time servant in the Bellamy household, to find them a suitable staff. In the end, Rose herself joins them as the Housekeeper. The 1930s are a difficult time in England. The Depression has taken its toll with high levels of unemployment. Fascism, which has become popular on the Continent in Italy and Germany, is also finding followers in the UK with Oswald Mosely's British Union of Fascists. As the new staff begin their daily work, the downstairs family begins to take shape.
Episode Summary:
After Mr Pritchard gets an invitation to act as Servants’ Representative for an uo coming Servants’ Ball, he meets fellow representative Miss Whisset and a courtship ends up following. The Holland’s marriage problems deepen and Lady Agnes decides to take some time away from forom the house. Sir Hallam finds himself thrown into turmoil with Agnes away and he becomes increasingly reckless. After he is confronted with the reality of his behaviour he starts to question whether his actions have had more sinister consequences.
