The lives of the lucky families are forever changed when they learn that they have been selected to have their home walls moved, their floors replaced and even their façades radically changed. The result should be a decorator's delight… if it can be done in time.

Season Info:
EM:HE is considered a spinoff of Extreme Makeover, an earlier series providing personal makeovers (often including plastic surgery) to selected individuals, which the Home Edition has now outlasted. This show displays extreme changes to help recreate someone's space. However, the format differs considerably; in the original Extreme Makeover, for instance, participants were not necessarily chosen based on any recent hardship, whereas the family's backstory is an important component of Home Edition. EM:HE also has similarities to other home renovation series such as Trading Spaces, on which Pennington was previously a key personality. The series is produced by Endemol USA (the people behind Big Brother, Fear Factor, Deal or No Deal, Wipeout, and other reality shows) in association with Disney-ABC Television Group's Greengrass Television. The current Executive Producers are Brady Connell and George Verschoor. The program originally aired on Sunday evenings but was moved to Friday nights as of October 21, 2011. It is currently the only program on ABC that has not yet converted to high definition. ABC receives thousands of applications from families in need, and the team says that it is extremely hard to filter through the stories and choose only one of them. The families they look for must meet two criteria: first, they must be truly deserving and in need of the makeover, and second, they must be the kind of people who give something of themselves back to their community. The main theme of the show is advocacy, as each family that is selected helps to address a wide range of issues in American society...

Storyline:
A family that has faced hardship has their dilapidated house completely rebuilt while they are away on vacation for a week. While early episodes renovated houses, the usual approach is to tear down the house on the first day and build a brand new, usually much larger, one, fully furnished. The houses are customized to the families, with rooms reflecting the interests of, especially, the children, and special technology for any unusual medical conditions. Host Ty Pennington usually has a "secret" project which is only revealed when the family sees it. The construction is accomplished with the help of a large army of blue-shirted volunteers and a wide array of sponsor-donated products and services.

Episode Summary:
On April 6, 2009, 11-year-old Carl Walker took his own life, forever changing the Walker family. For almost a year Carl had told his mother, Sirdeaner Walker, about the many incidents of kids bullying him at school. The family still hasn't been able to return to normal after Carl's death, but they have focused their energies on helping others. They has turned this tragic event into something positive by lobbying for new state and federal laws against bullying. The Walker house was a living memory of the most horrific night in any family's life. The 3rd floor was where Carl Walker took his own life. As a result, the family could not bear the sadness of being on that floor. The "EM: HE" team had just seven days to build a brand new home for the Walker family, a new facility that would meet their current needs and also honor Carl in a positive way. The Walker family was whisked away on a dream vacation to Hollywood, where they were greeted by Kim and Kourtney Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian Odom. The Kardashian sisters hosted an Anti Bullying Rally in support of the Walker family and enlisted the help of their friend, Demi Lovato, who performed for the crowd. The event was sponsored by Sears. Back in Massachusetts, teen sensation Cody Simpson performed, and enlisted hundreds of teens to join him in a Stand Together March to stop bullying.
