As of November 11, 2011, a total of 316 individual episodes have aired, with a total of 165 shows. The episodes air in half-hour time blocks in which each half-hour airing consists of either two eleven-minute shorts, a triad of seven-minute shorts, or a twenty-two minute special. In a rare case, a forty-five minute television movie will take up a one-hour time block. A feature film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie complements the series, and premiered in theaters in the United States on November 19, 2004. In season five, the series' first television film, Atlantis SquarePantis, premiered on November 12, 2007 after a television marathon and on November 6, 2009, the second television film, Truth or Square premiered. The first six seasons are available on DVD for Regions 1, 2 and 4 as of December 2010. The eighth season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on March 26, 2011 with the episodes "A Friendly Game" and "Oral Report" and will consist of 26 episodes, bringing the number of episodes up to 178. Some time during this season, about 13 episodes so far, SpongeBob SquarePants will overtake Rugrats as the longest running Nicktoon (in terms of number of episodes in which Rugrats had 172 episodes and SpongeBob currently has 165 so far). According to the Season 8 description of SpongeBob on iTunes, Bubble Buddy (from season 2; "Bubble Buddy Returns") will return for a visit, there will be another official Halloween episode ("Ghoul Fools"), and SpongeBob and friends will go on vacations ("A Squarepants Family Vacation")...
Storyline:
The character-driven toon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends. Dwelling a few fathoms beneath the tropical isle of Bikini Atoll in the sub-surface city of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob lives in a two-story pineapple. Instead of taking the logical approach to everyday challenges, SpongeBob approaches life in a wayward and unconventional way. Whether searching for the ultimate spatula to perfect his burger flipping technique at the Krusty Krab, or just hanging out with his best friend Patrick (an amiable starfish), SpongeBob's good intentions and overzealous approach to life usually create chaos in his underwater world.
