Some time during this season, about 13 episodes so far, SpongeBob SquarePants will overtake Rugrats as the longest running Nicktoon (in terms of number of episodes in which Rugrats had 172 episodes and SpongeBob currently has 165 so far). According to the Season 8 description of SpongeBob on iTunes, Bubble Buddy (from season 2; "Bubble Buddy Returns") will return for a visit, there will be another official Halloween episode ("Ghoul Fools"), and SpongeBob and friends will go on vacations ("A Squarepants Family Vacation"). The pilot episode of SpongeBob SquarePants first aired episodes in the United States on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999, following the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. The first episodes were called "Help Wanted", "Reef Blower", and "Tea at the Treedome". The "official" series premiere followed on July 17, 1999, with the second episode, "Bubblestand/Ripped Pants." The show reached enormous popularity by 2000 during the second season, and has remained popular since. A feature film of the series was released in theaters on November 19, 2004. Storyline:
The character-driven toon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends. Dwelling a few fathoms beneath the tropical isle of Bikini Atoll in the sub-surface city of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob lives in a two-story pineapple. Instead of taking the logical approach to everyday challenges, SpongeBob approaches life in a wayward and unconventional way. Whether searching for the ultimate spatula to perfect his burger flipping technique at the Krusty Krab, or just hanging out with his best friend Patrick (an amiable starfish), SpongeBob's good intentions and overzealous approach to life usually create chaos in his underwater world.
