Though his heart is usually in the right place, he's always scheming ways to climb the social ladder and is driven by an immature and almost obsessive urge to be on "the scene." The third roommate, Winston (Lamorne Morris), is an intensely competitive former athlete who has recently come to the realization that he'll never play pro. He moves back into the loft and must figure out how to live in a world without basketball - a world where not everything is about winning and losing.

On September 28, 2011, after only two episodes aired, Fox ordered an additional eleven episodes to the initial thirteen episode order, bringing the first season to twenty-four episodes and making New Girl the first new series to get a full season pickup of the 2011–2012 television season. The series was created, produced and written by Elizabeth Meriwether for Chermin Entertainment and Fox Television Studios. In the second episode, Coach is kicked out of the apartment and replaced by a new character named Winston, who returns from a professional basketball career in Latvia. The show explains this change by stating that Winston's name is on the lease and Coach was subletting the apartment from him. The change is due to the renewal of the ABC sitcom Happy Endings for a second season after it was presumed to be over; Damon Wayans, Jr., who played Coach, is a cast member on Happy Endings. The series stars Zooey Deschanel as Jessica "Jess" Day, a well-liked, bubbly woman in her late 20s who is trying to get over her breakup with her boyfriend after he cheats on her. She eventually finds a new place to stay when she moves in with three guys: Nick, a bartender; Schmidt, a professional and modern-day Casanova; and Winston, a former Basketball Player. Rounding out this unlikely bunch is Jessica's street-smart model friend Cece. Together, this group of friends tries to help Jess learn a lot about love, life and mostly about herself, while at the same time learn a lot about themselves....
