It was created by Julian Jones, Jake Michie, Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps based on the Arthurian legends of the mythical wizard Merlin and his relationship with Prince Arthur, but differs from traditional versions of the legend in many ways, especially the characters. It is produced by independent production company Shine Limited. American broadcaster NBC began airing the programme on 21 June 2009, but after a decline in viewership, the show moved to the cable network Syfy, where it began broadcast of the second series on 2 April 2010. The first three series are available on DVD in the UK and the first two in North America, with the third season scheduled to be released January 17, 2012. The first three series are available on Netflix Streaming in North America. Merlin is a young wizard who arrives in the kingdom of Camelot after his mother arranges for him to stay with the court physician, Gaius. He discovers that the king, Uther Pendragon, has outlawed magic and imprisoned the last great dragon deep under the kingdom. The dragon tells Merlin that he plays an important role: to protect Uther's son, Arthur, who will bring forth a great kingdom. When Merlin meets Arthur, he believes that he is an arrogant bully and Arthur, likewise, has a less than stellar opinion of Merlin. Merlin must keep his magic secret or face being executed by Uther....
Storyline:
Young Merlin is a teenager, discovering and then learning to master his magical gift. Magister Gaius, King Uther Pendragon's learned court physician to whom he's assigned as humble page, teaches him medicine, coaches his magical self-study, and warns him of Uther's strong aversion to magic. Merlin becomes squire to the noble but imprudent crown prince, Arthur, whose fate is linked with Merlin.
Episode Summary:
Morgana forms an alliance with the enigmatic wizard Alator to try and uncover a secret that could change the course of destiny. Now that she counts on allies on both sides of the castle walls, would anyone be able to stop Morgana before Merlin's greatest secret is revealed?
