Pan Am is a television series centered around the iconic airline Pan American World Airways during the early 1960s. The period drama, from writer Jack Orman (ER) and director Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing), has a storyline that begins in 1963 and focuses on the pilots and stewardesses working for the world-famous airline.The series, produced by Sony Pictures Television, was picked up by ABC in May 2011 for the 2011–2012 television season. Sony licensed the rights to the Pan Am name and logo from Pan Am Systems, a New Hampshire–based railroad company that acquired the Pan Am brand in 1998. The September 12, 2011 edition of TV Guide's Fall Preview issue included an advertisement on the back of the magazine, tilted upside down, featuring Ricci, Garner, Vanasse, and Robbie appearing as their characters for a fictional cover for TV Guide, using the magazine's 1960s logo. The series will air in Canada on CTV on the same night as the ABC telecasts, but will be shown in different timeslots by region. It will also air on CTV's sister cable channel Bravo! on Saturdays. In the UK, the series was picked up by BBC Two, who said "Pan Am captures the excitement and optimism of travel in the 1960s, when being an air hostess was the most glamorous occupation you could possibly have. With a love story at its heart and a great unfolding plot that hints at the danger and mystery to come, viewers will be in for an exciting but turbulent ride." In Ireland, the show airs on RTÉ Two. The crew flies to Rangoon after a last minute change of schedule, where Maggie decides to show Laura the wilder side of town. Kate undertakes what should be a simple mission, but which turns out to be more difficult than she thought. Meanwhile, Ted thinks back on his past after hearing about a new space mission, and of how his family connections have impacted his life.
Episode Summary:
After a last minute change sends the crew on a flight to Rangoon, a routine courier mission for Kate turns harrowing as she struggles to make a drop by the deadline. Meanwhile, Maggie takes naive Laura under her wing and shows her the wilder side of the city; and news of a space mission leads Ted to reflect on his own past and what his powerful family connections have cost him.
