So it's goodbye New York City and hello suburbs. At first Tessa is horrified by the big-haired, fake-boobed mothers and their sugar-free Red Bull-chugging kids. But little by little she and her dad begin finding a way to survive on the clean streets of the 'burbs. Sure, the neighbors might smother you with love while their kids stare daggers at your back, but underneath all that plastic and caffeine, they're really not half bad. And they do make a tasty pot roast.

The title is a portmanteau of the words "suburban" and "purgatory". The series follows a single father who decides to get away from New York City to the suburbs so he can give his 15 year-old daughter a better life after he finds an unopened box of condoms in her drawer . However, the move to suburbs has the daughter wondering if they just entered the world of The Stepford Wives after they see how "perfect" their new locale is, right down to the neighbors who welcome them into the cul-de-sac. The series takes place in the fictional town of Chatswin. According to an onscreen map animation, it is located near the north shore of Long Island Sound between Rye, NY and Darien, CT. The 914 area code would indicate it is in Westchester County, New York state. In the second minute of the pilot episode, an arial shot zooms into 69 Carleon Ave, Larchmont, NY, but then the angle changes and a different property appears. The series takes its title from the book released a week following the show premiere by former CNN Senior Producer Linda Keenan, based in part on her experiences after she moved from New York City to three affluent suburbs, the first of which was in Westchester County. The show has been met with generally positive reviews, with an initial score of 70 out of 100 from Metacritic."Kapnek manages to make a show that is both satiric and emotionally engaging," said David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle, "two varieties of comedy [that] don't always work well together. Episode Summary:
When Tessa overhears George break up with his girlfriend, Zoe, on Skype, she blames herself for his failed relationship and decides that she's going to get them back together. Unbeknownst to her, though, George is really enamored with Tessa's cute art teacher, Aimee. He admits to Mr. Wolfe that he's over dating crazy city women, and that he's looking for love in the burbs. George decides to embrace the holiday spirit with a tree trimming party complete with ex-girlfriend, potential new girlfriend and the Royces, and he soon finds himself under the mistletoe with a special someone.
